ABOUT

History

Perhaps most intriguing about Half Day is its name, which provokes more interest and debate than any other place name in the northwest suburbs of Chicago.

Contrary to popular theory, the town of Half Day was not named because it was a half day’s journey from Chicago. The town’s true name was Halfda in honor of a friendly chief.

Chief Atakisic (Aphis), of the Potawatomie tribe was a Native American leader of great standing in this area in the early 1800’s. The friendly tribes of Potawatomie Indians were the first settlers to arrive in 1730 in what is now known as Lincolnshire.

The Chief was instrumental in negotiating the Treaty of Chicago in 1833, and in 1832, during the Black Hawk War; Aptakisic protected the settlers in Downer’s Grove from an impending attack.

When the first non-native Americans settlers began to move into the area, Chief Aptakisic and his tribe helped Daniel Wright construct a log cabin along the Des Plaines river – the first home built in Lake County.

The name Aptakisic, also spelled Optageshic or Aptegizhek  – translated means:

  • Center of sky
  • Sun at its meridian
  • half day

Both Daniel Wright and Henry Blodgett who knew Aptakisic, documented that he was “known as Half Day.” Wright went on to say that the village took its name from Chief Aptakisic.

An early cartographer spelled it Half Day, adding the “y” to Chief Half Da, when writing about him – and so it remained.

The historic town of Half Day claims many firsts in the annals of Lake County history—the first post office (1836), the first school (1836) and the county’s first non-native settler.

In 1955 a subdivision called Lincolnshire was recorded in Waukegan, the County seat for Lake County. It marked the beginning of the Village of Lincolnshire.  Both the village of Lincolnshire and Vernon Hills later claimed the land known as unincorporated Half Day.

Concept

Half Day Brewing Company is INSPIRED.
Half Day Brewing Company is THE MEETING PLACE.

To do this we have assembled a collection of energetic and knowledgeable staff members who have a passion for food and beer like we do.

Fresh creative dishes, drinks and beer that will shock the taste buds will be our mantra.

When you enter the 14,000 square foot building, your senses will be assaulted with the smell of our Wood Burning Oven. The Brewery Room has an industrial feel to it with concrete floors and bar top, large open ceiling with exposed ducts. The large gas pipes surrounding the bar as if fresh beer was flowing throughout and the 3 garage doors open up to the extensive patio with a fire pit. Deep stained wood tables, industrial can lights and clear coated steel chairs are found in the entire building. A stage that utilizes the Brew-House as a back drop will be used for Live Music on Friday and Saturday nights.

Just past our expansive retail section is the Main Dining Room, which is anchored by the “Martini/Wine” bar.  Plush booths, carpet and metal are splashed throughout the space. Large pipes and wires which signify the growing of HOPS are a central focal point with windows peering into the kitchen and a large window highlighting the Wood Burning Oven.

The feel is casual, comfortable yet energetic with music for the masses. LCD TV’s in every sight line, and a golden hue of lighting all cast an inviting, exciting and sophisticated atmosphere.

FOOD! The menu will feature artesian hand tossed Pizza made in our wood fired oven with a very thin crust and exceptional flavor profiles. A super thin crust cooks fast and service times will be quick and easy to accommodate large families, groups and events. House made chips, Dutch oven steamed mussels, truffle deviled eggs, proprietary ground beef blend hand patty burgers, Braised Beef of the Day and baked pasta dishes are highlights of our Inspired “Gastro-Pub” fare.

BEER! Our Brew-House will produce up to 12 different brews to be served, from Lagers to IPA’s, to Stout’s and Seasonal, and even some small batch wood barrel aged specialty beers. The Brew Master will also create craft sodas, do brewery tours and walk throughout the facility and let guests sample our craft brews, and be educated on the Half Day Brewing experience.

RETAIL/CARRY-OUT!  This area is the conduit of the brand, and connects the two main rooms of the building. Guests wanting to take our brand with them, be it food, beer, soda or apparel, they will be our ambassadors and have a huge impact on marketing and revenue for Half Day Brewing Company.

THE MEETING PLACE! Half Day Brewing Company is the local gathering place for any event. We will be capitalizing on the high density of day time professional corporate population, hotels, residence and the village of Lincolnshire. We will become an integral part of the community and be involved with all village sponsored events such as, the Christmas tree lighting, Halloween Pumpkin Patch, taste of Lincolnshire, art festival and food truck Fridays. A full time sales and special event manager will be on staff to insure that we are THE MEETING PLACE, in the northwest suburbs.
